Modak is a part of Indian cuisine and it is made with a stuffing made of coconut and jaggery. Modak can be fried or steamed and are made as offerings to Lord Ganesh. Modak recipe belongs to Western and Southern India. The recipe of Modak is said to have originated in Maharashtra. In Marathi, it is called Modak and in Karnataka, it is known as Modhaka. Ganesh Chaturti is the time when Modak’s are made through out the country as an offering to Lord Ganesha.

Ingredients:

Filling/ puran for Modak

1.2 cups grated coconut

2. 1 cup grated jaggery

3. 2 or 3 green cardamom powdered

4. 1 tsp ghee

For outer cover

1. 1 cup rice flour.

2. 1 cup water

3. pinch of salt

4. 1 tsp ghee

5. 1 tsp ghee for greasing

Preparation:

1. Add ghee to a hot pan. Saute together jaggery and coconut until both blend well and the mixture turns thick. Add cardamom powder and switch off. Cool this completely.

2. Bring 1 cup water to boil along with salt and ghee. Switch of the heat.

3. Add the flour and mix well. Cover and set aside until the temperature comes down a bit.

4.  While the mixture is still hot,knead it to a soft dough and make 11 equal sized balls.

5. Take a ball and make dent in the center.Bring 1 cup water to boil along with salt and ghee. Switch of the heat.

5. Take a ball and make dent in the center. Dip the fingers in water . In a circular  motion begin to spread the dough to make a thin disc using thumb and forefingers on both the hands.

6. Pinch off little dough on the outer side of the disc to make pleats at a distance of 1/2 to 3/4 inch.

7. Place the coconut mixture in the center. Bring together all the pleats and join them carefully. If needed moist the fingers and join them.

8.Place all the modak’s in a steamer basket layered with moist cloth.

9. Bring water to boil in a steamer and steam the modak’s for 10 mins.

10. Rest modak for 10 mins and serve.
